FAQ with Answers

There are some areas of deprescribing that we do have well understood, research-backed evidence and recommendations.

Some of this is relatively new information, even to many doctors and prescribers.

  • Is depression caused by a “chemical imbalance” / “serotonin imbalance”?
  • What is the reason some people need to use hyperbolic tapering (reducing by a set percentage at each step down eg 10%) rather than standard tapering?
  • What makes withdrawal symptoms more likely?
  • How bad can withdrawal reactions get?

FAQs With No Answers

There is so much we still have to understand and study in this area of medicine.

That means there are many questions we have only preliminary or conflicting answers for, such as:

  • How common are withdrawal symptoms?
  • How can I treat my withdrawal symptoms?
  • I got sexual / genital side effects. Will they go away when I stop the medication?
  • What is the risk of relapse vs withdrawal when I stop my antidepressant?
  • What is the interaction of taking more than one psychotropic drug at a time?
  • What are the long-term effects of these medications on heart disease, falls, memory, bone health etc?
